Don’t get too specific with your musical decisions. It’s better to say, “We’ll vamp until cue” instead of “Play this 6 times.” No one will remember to play that section 6 times at your performance, and being so specific will just add to the stress of being on stage!

Hi Alan – Thank you for replying. Many musicians who come to me for coaching are in your situation, just getting back to playing music after a years-long hiatus. The ideas in my Top Ten Practice Tips ebook will serve as a guide for you as you shape your practicing. The #1 idea is to play guitar every day, even if just for a few minutes. Never skipping a day of practice does wonders, both for technique and for the idea that “Yes, I can do this.” One recommendation I have specifically for classical guitar is to build comfort and facility by doing single string chromatic scales, slowly and methodically. Focus on minimizing motion in your fretting hand. You may also be interested in my book: Ten Minute Guitar Virtuoso. All the best with your guitar playing!!
If you have some weekly tips on classical guitar practicing for someone that is 68 and just getting back st after nearly 40 years would be most helpful!
Thanks,
Alan
